How ECHO works
Survive as long as you can. Your score is the time you stay alive, to the hundredth of a second.
Playing
- Tap anywhere on the screen (or press Space) to jump. Hold to keep jumping each time you land.
- You run automatically from left to right and the world speeds up slowly the longer you last.
- Spikes come towards you. The game picks the jump height for you: a short hop for a small spike, higher for a tall one.
- Every jump comes back. Exactly 4 seconds after you jump, a ghost of that jump (an Echo) appears from the right and repeats your jump at you. It crosses you once, then fades for good.
- If an Echo is low when it reaches you, you must jump it. If it is high, you can run under it. Touching a spike or an Echo ends the run.
- Jumping more creates more Echoes. Jumping only when you need to is the main skill.
- The thin timeline under the timer shows every Echo still to come and how many seconds away it is.
The daily course
- Each day, every player in the world gets the same course: the spikes appear in the same places and at the same times for everyone. Your Echoes are your own, because they come from your jumps.
- A day runs from midnight to midnight UTC (1:00 am to 1:00 am in British Summer Time, midnight to midnight in winter). At that moment a new course is generated for the new day; the previous day's course is finished and kept in the archive.
- The course itself is random each day. It is not planned, voted on or chosen by anyone; it simply changes once every 24 hours.
- If you play offline, your run uses a private course instead, so it counts for the all-time board but not for the day.
Leaderboards
- Today ranks everyone's best time on today's course. It starts empty each day when the course changes. Yesterday's results are not deleted; they are archived for that day.
- All-time ranks everyone's best time ever, on any day's course. It never resets, and your best stays until you beat it or delete your account.
- Ranking is by longest time first. If two players have the same time, the one who set it first ranks higher.
- You move up and down only when bests change. Your all-time position can drop if other players beat your time; your time itself never changes.
- So your position can look different from one day to the next: Today shows a new race on a new course; All-time shows the same lifetime list.
- Every ranked run is checked on our server by replaying your taps. Runs that cannot be reproduced are rejected and never appear.
- Tap any player on the board to watch their best run, browse their history, or race them live on today's course.
What persists, what resets
- Persists: your username, your all-time best, your run history and replays, and every past day's board.
- Resets daily: the course, and the Today board (archived, not erased).
- Never changes on its own: your times. Only you can improve them, and only you can delete your account (Settings).
Usernames
- 3 to 16 characters: letters, numbers and underscores. One per player; names are unique whatever the capitalisation. You can change yours every 30 days.
- Names must be appropriate. Inappropriate names are refused when chosen, and may be changed or removed later. Please don't use your real name.
